Achilles tendinopathy

The Achilles is an important tendon at the back of the ankle which helps generate movement of the ankle whilst walking or running. The Achilles tendon is prone to excessive force in particular during running or weight lifting activities and can be prone to injury. Symptoms include pain on the back of the heel with swelling and thickening of the tendon. This can make walking uncomfortable.

Treatment of Achilles tendon problems include soft tissue massage, electrotherapy, orthotics and a graduated tendon loading programme. In cases of severe trauma it is imperative to rule out a tear of the tendon as this will often require surgical management. In such cases we can refer you to Dr Connolly who with the aid of diagnostic ultrasound can rule a tear. If you suffer with pain in your Achilles tendon come and have it professionally assessed at Standish Therapy Centre.
